How a local millionaire makes decisions

I listened to Phillip Di Bella speak at a Brisbane entrepreneurs "do" last night - hosted by new networking organisation, The Hive.

Di Bella's story is well known - from $5000 investment to $28M national business in a sector with 600 Australian competitors. For the moment, the marketing message is that one million cups of Di Bella coffee are consumed every day around Australia. It helps that coffee is the most consumed drink around the world bar one. Still, it is an impressive feat considering he started the business in 2002.

Though I know the Di Bella brand (I live in the same city as this self-made millionaire), I had not heard Phil's story, and last night I heard it from the man himself.

And I loved his principle message, "Get comfortable with the worst possible scenario, then don't let anything hold you back."

In 2002 Phillip could only get comfortable with losing $5000 of his own cash, so that is what he started with. And it seems he hasn't let anything hold him back on his journey so far.

Phillip's lesson for me? This is a clear and simple way to make decisions and act on them, big or small, in business and in life. His message has really flicked on a switch. Thank you Phillip!

One goal I have had is to live and work overseas for an extended period of time. Not a big deal, right? But, now I can see why I have dithered over relocating. The worst case scenario for me is going without my life partner - I don't want our relationship to drift apart because of it (how do long distance relationships work?). On and off over the last few years, my indecision has caused frustration, arguments, tears, soul searching, recrimination, blame. But, in essence, I am just not comfortable relocating overseas without my man. Simple. I now have a clear view of the situation, and am comfortable with my decision, and I can concentrate on the next goal - both of us relocating overseas!

With this new way of looking at a problem, I foresee decision making will be easier, going for goals will be fueled by 100% commitment. No backward glances, no regrets.

Phillip Di Bella's message for success: get comfortable with the worst possible scenario, then don't let anything hold you back.
